If students are to develop the skills and habits described in the TEKS, they must engage in rich experiences that require them to use those skills and habits. However, such tasks are not meaningful absent of scientific context and content. Good tasks provide opportunities for students to apply their understanding in new ways as well as evidence of insight, misconceptions, and problem-solving strategies that can be used by teachers to guide instruction. Equally important, however, is the opportunity such tasks provide for teachers to help students build proficiency and automaticity with scientific practices and processes.
