Formative Assessment Tools and Tasks

If students are to develop the understanding, skills, and habits described in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics, they must engage in rich problem-solving experiences that require them to demonstrate that understanding and to use those skills and habits. Good formative assessment tasks provide evidence of student insight, student misconceptions, and problem-solving strategies that can be used by teachers to guide instruction. Equally important, however, is the opportunity such tasks provide for teachers to help students build proficiency and automaticity with the mathematical processes.
